Graffiti artist AKUT (@akut_herakut) has been part of the HALLENKUNST Artists-in-Residence Program for quite some time and stayed at the CAMMANN Studios in Chemnitz in the spring of last year to create a canvas work. This canvas work forms the basis for the mural, which is currently being painted as part of HALLENKUNST's Mural Art Program. What he is bringing to the wall here at Chemnitz' Sonnenberg is the third image in his portrait series "Gegen das Vergessen" (Les We Forget) featuring faces of Holocaust survivors on large scale murals. The first two were created in Mannheim, Germany and in his hometown of Schmalkalden, Thuringia.
The templates for these were photographs by Luigi Toscano, who has photographed over 400 Holocaust survivors worldwide. As part of the HALLENKUNST Public Mural Program, Falk painted Justin Sonder, an Auschwitz and Holocaust survivor from Chemnitz who passed away in 2020.
The photographic templates for both artworks come from Chemnitz photographer Philipp Gladsome (@philipp_gladsome). The mural stays at at Glockenstraße 2 on the Sonnenberg in Chemnitz and the corresponding canvas is part of HALLENKUNST in the Markthalle Chemnitz, on display from August 28th to August 31st, 2025 for the opening weekend, or during opening hours until September 21st, 2025.
